Mater Dei's Cox Says He Will Sign with KWC

Article excerpt

It's that crazy time of year when four-year schools officially make offers, or back out, or high school and junior-college kids change their minds as the first day of the spring signing period beckons on Wednesday. One thing is certain: Mater Dei High School senior offensive tackle Matthew Cox has made an oral commitment to continue his career at Kentucky Wesleyan College. Cox has announced he will sign with the NCAA Division II Panthers on Wednesday.

Mater Dei coach Mike Goebel said the fact former Wildcats standout Bernie Boots is currently a sophomore offensive guard for the Panthers played a role in his decision.

"He's very intelligent and he's very coachable and understands the game," Goebel said. "There's a lot of upside with Matthew."

Goebel said Cox is an excellent drive blocker as well as pass protector.

"He's just improved so much every year," Goebel said.

Sander, who is a sophomore first baseman at Vincennes University, is hitting.395 for the Trailblazers (24-12). His six triples are tied for second in NJCAA Division II. Sander also has 29 runs batted in and 49 hits in 36 games. He has struck out just four times in 139 plate appearances. He led Region 12 in RBIs (40) and hits (55) last season.

"I'm just really looking for a place to go in and work for a spot in the lineup," Sander said. …
