I am not a parent yet, but being a mom is and always has been a great dream of mine. As a future mom, one of my goals is to raise responsible children, along with many other important character traits. I was an only child, so yes I admit to being a little spoiled by my parents, but I was still expected to do things around the house to help out. Those chores taught me responsibility.

I am now a homeowner and thankful my mom instilled in me some of the responsibilities I now need. I wonder how lost I would be if she hadn't taught me to be responsible?

On a website called Mom It Forward, there is an article giving tips on how to raise responsible children. Here's what they had to say.

1. Start young - simple things like helping set the table or putting toys away.

2. Show children how tasks should be done - model for them what it is you want them to do, and be clear about your expectations. Anyone who has been around children knows that children are imitators. Use those imitation skills to your advantage!

3. Let them show someone else how a task should be done - teaching someone else only reinforces that skill further.

4. Be trustworthy and dependable - children watch adults and they learn from them. Be a good example for them.

5. Apologize when you mess up - kids already know everyone makes mistakes, so we might as well admit when we are wrong. This will show them there is no shame is being wrong, and that it is right to take responsibility for mistakes.

6. Give children a role or job within the family - give them something to do that matters and is important, even if it is something small. …
