Sarkozy Denies Receiving Funds from Qaddafi

The investigative group Mediapart suggested that Mr. Sarkozy's 2007 election campaign received up to EUR 50 million in illegal support from the Libyan leader.

A spokesman for President Nicolas Sarkozy on Monday sharply denied a suggestion by the investigative group Mediapart that Mr. Sarkozy's 2007 election campaign received up to EUR 50 million in illegal financial support from Col. Muammar el-Qaddafi.

Mr. Qaddafi's son Saif al-Islam said a year ago, just before the French-led military intervention in Libya, that Libya had helped finance the campaign of Mr. Sarkozy, whose aides denied the allegation at the time.

Now Mediapart has published a briefing note, written in a kind of shorthand in December 2006, that suggests that arrangements for some money were made in October 2005, when Mr. Sarkozy was interior minister and long before the election.
