AUTO RACING; Johnson 'Dying' for Elusive Win at Bristol

BRISTOL - For the past year, Allen Johnson has been counting down the hours until his return trip to Bristol Dragway.

In the past two races on his home track, the veteran Pro Stock competitor from Greeneville has qualified No. 1 and advanced to the semifinals.

But that first win at Bristol remains elusive.

"We're dying for it," Johnson said.

Johnson joined a large group of National Hot Rod Association racers and representatives Thursday at the Country Club of Bristol for a golf tournament benefiting the Bristol chapter of Speedway Children's Charities.

Entering today's Ford NHRA Thunder Valley Nationals, the familiar Pro Stock storyline centers around the battle between the Summit Racing team of Greg Anderson and Jason Line versus the Mopar gang of Johnson and Vincent Nobile.

Johnson, who has won two races, ranks third in points behind Anderson and Line, who have combined for five victories in nine events. Anderson and Line also participated in Thursday's charity golf event.

"We've got a good rivalry going, and those two knuckleheads are right in the middle of it," Johnson said. "They just get lucky from time to time."

A dream scenario almost unfolded for the Johnson family last year at Bristol, as Johnson's father, Roy, charged to the semifinals in the Stock Eliminator class. …
