Not much has changed on our list of Knoxville-area assisted living facilities this year, but recent news reveals some newcomers on the way.

Regency Retirement Village retains the top spot on our list. The Morristown facility has 137 beds and was founded in 1985.

Most facilities on our list likewise maintained their rankings from last year.

Elmcroft of West Knoxville, NHC Place in Farragut, Homewood Residence at Deane Hill and Atria Weston Place -- which edged up one spot -- round out the top five. Each facility reports more than 100 licensed beds on site. Atria, opened in 1993, is the oldest facility among them.

New to the list this year is Wellspring Senior Living at Raintree, which opened last summer.

The West Knoxville facility is the first project of Knoxville- based Raintree Assisted Living LLC. It cost $7 million and includes 48 assisted living suites and 14 rooms in a memory-care wing.

Skip Wheeler, director of community relations for Raintree, noted in 2012 that it was the first new assisted living construction in Knoxville in more than a decade.

Wellspring plans to open three more assisted living centers in Tennessee in the next two years. A Powell location is expected this summer and facilities are planned in Sevierville and Johnson City in 2014.

National trends point to further growth in the assisted living sector. …
