RECENTLY we had guests for dinner and had the opportunity to compare two dinner party wines.

Matching syrah or Rhone-esque wines with lamb was elementary but my guests were surprised that the new world wine I chose was more elegant than a Rhone example from Cornas.

Vidal Legacy Syrah 2009 (Pounds 17.99, The London Wine Company, Cork and Kegg, thedrinkshop.com) was typically evocative Kiwi syrah and everybody loved it. Fragrant black pepper, aniseed and liquorice on the nose, it is a very fresh tasting syrah of exceptional balance.

Jean-Luc Colombo Cornas Mejeans 2009 (Pounds 22.99, Luvian's Bottle Shop; Handford Wine; Fine Wine Company, Edinburgh; Les Caves du Patron; Portland Wine Co) was less appealing to everyone else although I preferred it. Jean Luc Colombo's wines are an acquired taste and after trying several bottles I feel I have it. His wines are often uncompromising with high alcohol levels and a palate which reflects that.

But that is not to say the fruit is over-extracted. …
