WE all want a bit of affordable glamour in our lives, especially in these credit crunch times. Which is certainly one way to explain the huge rise in popularity of the blow dry.

Paying someone else to wash and dry your hair for you sounds a bit daft, doesn't it? But as we ladies well know, blow drying your own hair into some kind of style is a tricky skill to master.

Indeed, I'm A Celebrity star Helen Flanagan has confessed that, pre-jungle, she couldn't even wash her own hair so dedicated was she to her daily salon blow dry fix.

So it's little surprise that dedicated blow dry salons are springing up all over the place. And as we head into party season, it's a chance to revamp our look without having to have a full on cut and colour.

Celebrity hairdresser Trevor Sorbie is the latest to cotton on to the trend, and this week has launched a blow dry bar in his Manchester Spring Gardens salon. There's a "menu" offering eight possible different hairstyles, for Pounds 20 a go. With a week of parties, events and happenings to attend as Diary Editor, I headed to see if they could transform my tresses for each day.

MONDAY I'M off to a black tie dinner, so for my first blow dry look I want girly glamour. Luckily, I'm in the hands of the right man - stylist Ben Bradley is known for making ladies look full-on fabulous. I'm also on a tight schedule but Ben manages to oomph up my hair in just 45 minutes.

The resulting "Big and Bouncy" does exactly what it says on the tin and I'm feeling marvellous as I leave the salon. But I've gone out in Manchester without a brolly! The weather does its best to ruin things, yet my bouffant is defiant. Thank goodness for Ben's liberal use of hair spray.

TUESDAY ARMED for the weather this time, I head to the blow dry bar for my second look. Tonight's event is a glitzy radio awards bash at Gorton Monastery. With celeb stylist Vincent Allenby on hand for some hair advice, we decide to go for the "tousled wave". I love this look and head to the do swishing my hair like a movie star. …
