THE automated home has been the stuff of science fiction fantasy for as long as men could imagine machines.

And now that most of us wander around with a tiny computer in our pockets, connected to the internet at all times, the power to control our own homes wirelessly and automate some of its functions is slowly becoming a reality.

A new lighting system from Philips shows what's possible.

Ok, so we've had automated lighting using crude timer switches for years - but Hue is really something much more sophisticated.

It consists of three elements - special lightbulbs, a controller hub that is connected to the internet, and a smartphone app. The bulbs are really where the magic happens - they contain LEDs of green, red and blue which allows them to shine in any one of 16million colours.

That means you can create any kind of mood.

And you can programme it too, using the smartphone app, which controls the bulbs via the hub.

Even better, you can copy colours from photos - making it easy to recreate the hue of the colours from favourite holiday snap, for example. …
