Charity Is Riding to the Rescue ; Club for Disabled Riders Needs Your Help

ACHARITY that gives disabled children the chance to ride horses is the latest addition to the M.E.N. Wish List.

For more than 10 years, Birtle and Rochdale Riding for Special Needs has been teaching people from all over Greater Manchester with learning and physical disabilities how to ride.

More than 40 volunteers, many from Bury Grammar School, regularly give their time, helping 70 riders with a variety of mental and physical disabilities get in the saddle.

Stables manager Sally Ashworth said there are many more people on the waiting list who want to ride at their stables on Elbut Lane in Birtle, Bury.

But as the country struggles to recover from the recession, the charity is struggling to say solvent.

She said: "We believe that riding and interacting with the horses has huge benefits for children and adults physically, mentally and emotionally. "But in the current economic climate, charitable giving is understandably low on people's agenda and we, like so many other charities, rely totally on our own fundraising efforts and any donations we get. …
