As Breast Cancer Awareness Month comes to an end this week, 57- yearold grandmother Pam Glass, explains why she will continue campaigning tirelessly to make one in 10 none in 10.

'If you don't want to get involved in her plan, don't ever say hello to Pam!" These are the last two lines of a poem written about me at the launch of the appeal for Europe's first breast cancer prevention centre in 1999.

In the beginning, it was Genesis, then The Genesis Appeal, and now Genesis Breast Cancer Prevention. I was given the opportunity to be part of something unique - the UK's only charity entirely dedicated to prevention - with our ability to fund new and visionary research projects, to enable them to progress into international research, to make ground-breaking evidence to determine prediction, risk and prevention of breast cancer. Who would not want to be part of that? It all started in 1995, when I was asked by the consultant surgeon and chairman of Genesis Breast Cancer Prevention, Lester Barr, to get involved with a new charity that he was establishing. It came about through my business, Consultantcare, which is based at two of the main private hospitals in the north west and provides 'care' for many different specialist doctors in the form of business and practice administration.

"I'd just like you to write a few thank you letters and maybe answer a telephone should anyone ring," and ring they did, following our launch in May 1996.

We were, and the trustees still are, completely voluntary. We had to get things done, so I found ways of encouraging people to come on board who had different areas of expertise, in the form of marketing, PR, fundraising co-ordination, volunteers, supporters and a scientific committee that establishes which grants our funds should be put towards. …
