I ONCE lived in Manchester and really loved it so was very pleased to have an opportunity to visit for work this week.

I had a great time. However, my experiences of Shudehill Interchange left a lot to be desired. It wasn't TFGM's fault that my Megabus was held up by 90 minutes.

Fog and such happens. What I did find really awful was the station itself.

Not so much brutalist architecture but designed by someone with no common sense or empathy whatsoever. It is grey, unwelcoming and depressing. Just because people are using public or budget transport doesn't mean they should be treated as second class citizens. The toilet entrances/exits were like a prison.

OK, if you need to have a turnstile I get it - but full body cage?! There was no cafe to sit and have a nice cuppa.

(Good to have a shop but why not a cafe like everywhere else?) There weren't enough seats. There were endless patronising health and safety notices about smoking, left luggage etc.

Frankly, though a proud nonsmoker, after nearly two hours of those I was sorely tempted to take up the habit. …
