APUB named the best in Britain is facing a battle for survival - because of the BBC's move to Salford Quays.

The Lass O'Gowrie - just a stone's throw from the corporation's old headquarters on Oxford Road - says it has lost a third of its trade since the switch.

The historic pub's managers have pleaded for a reduction in their business rates - but have been turned down.

The news comes just a month after the Lass O'Gowrie was named Great British Pub of the Year in the brewing industry's 'Oscars'.

'It's been awful since the BBC closed' About 2,000 BBC staff, switched to the corporation's new MediaCity base last year.

Lisa Connor and Gareth Kavanagh, who run the Charles Street pub, asked the Valuation Office Agency (VOA) to cut their Pounds 2,100 monthly business rates to compensate for the loss of trade.

But they were turned down - with the VOA saying they would only consider a reduction when demolition of the BBC's old headquarters is complete. …
