Council's Head of Children's Services Was Right to Resign ; COMMENT

In resigning his job as head of children's services for Rochdale Council, Steve Garner has done the right thing.

So often, awful revelations about failures in public life are met with undignified buck-passing between politicians and civil servants. For instance, a carving up of the blame is currently underway in relation to the suspension of the West Coast Main Line bid process. Three civil servants have been suspended after it emerged the government got its sums fundamentally wrong. Recompensing the companies concerned in that abortive process will cost Pounds 40m.

The cost of failure in relation to the Rochdale sex grooming scandal is much greater, though, for it can be counted in human misery. Nine men were jailed for grooming five youngsters for sex, though police believe there could have been up to 47 victims.

Those victims went into this ordeal vulnerable, and emerged from it damaged. The failures were not the fault solely of one person or even one agency. …
