Labour Leader Will Be Held to Account on Child Poverty Promise ; COMMENT

ED Miliband deserves huge credit for today giving his full backing to the M.E.N.'s crusade against the scandal of children going hungry in our great city. The Labour leader described as 'shocking' figures showing 40,000 youngsters in Manchester are now living in poverty.

Not only that, but he pledged to put the issue at the top of the agenda should he win the next general election. Mr Miliband said: "It is an incredibly important campaign. It is something the next Labour government will ensure is a priority as we seek a country that is fairer, more just and more equal."

In an age when politicians often shy away from the difficult issues, or make half-hearted non-promises, Mr Miliband is to be commended for being so decisive. Our praise, however, comes with a warning: a clear promise is a promise that must be kept. If Labour wins the next general election in 2015, we fully intend to hold him to account.

In the meantime, we hope Mr Miliband and his team will work to highlight the issue as best they can while in opposition. …
