DANNY Cipriani believes Sale could have unearthed their very own Special One in the formidable shape of new boss John Mitchell.

Despite being at the Sale helm for a little over a week as director of rugby, the tack-sharp influence of the former All Blacks head coach was writ large over Saturday's battling 17-6 defeat to French giants Toulon at Barton.

Sale's previously porous defence largely stood firm against the star-studded French juggernaut, while in attack Cipriani and his colleagues ensured Toulon could never relax.

The Sharks face an even greater test of their new-found resilience on Sunday when they jet out to the shores of the Mediterranean to tackle the Top 14 leaders at their imposing Stade Mayol fortress before the more serious business of the resumption of Premiership action. But Cipriani believes if he and his colleague carry on paying heed to Mitchell's methods, they can yet extricate themselves from the foot of the league table.

And the 25-year-old says Mitchell can have the same galvanising effect on the Sale squad as Jose Mourihno has enjoyed in his stellar coaching career.

"Did you watch that documentary about Jose Mourinho the other day?" Cipriani asked in the wake of Saturday's encouraging display. "The way he gets his players to go with him is brilliant. And I've realised with John that he really understands the game, he's been all over the world and he knows what he's talking about.

"He's such an experienced guy and it's really important that we try and draw from that experience.

"It's a mentality thing now and I think our training has to become more clinical as does the way we work.

"But the way we started the game against Toulon was the best we've come out of the blocks for that first 20 minutes - and that was against one of the best teams you could come up against.

"Now we have to replicate that week in, week out. …
