JOHN Mitchell wants his Sale growth strategy to bear further green shoots of recovery when the Sharks step out to face mighty Toulon in the French giants' imposing Stade Mayol fortress tomorrow (4pm).

A week on from a battling 17-6 home defeat to the top 14 leaders, Sale jetted out to the south of France yesterday for a Heineken Cup return which promises to be another demanding experience on what is a steep learning curve under their new director of rugby.

With the fight to avoid relegation from the Premiership the priority and more immediately next Sunday's pivotal league trip to Wasps, Mitchell has opted to make a few subtle changes to his starting 15.

Few will be rushing to the bookies to put money on a Sale win - even if Toulon have opted to put icons such as Jonny Wilkinson, Juan Lobbe and Andrew Sheridan on the bench.

But as far as Mitchell is concerned, the key object of the exercise is to maintain the encouraging progress which was so apparent at a rain-lashed Barton last Saturday.

"We're looking for further improvement from last weekend," declared the Sharks director of rugby.

"Obviously, Toulon are very experienced and they are at home so that will crate an extra challenge for our side.

"But I'm very much wanting to see further growth in our game. We managed to largely shut them down last week but we didn't get enough to possession to create pressure of our own.

"Its another privileged opportunity for our players to play against a side like Toulon. Their squad is probably worth about six times what we are in terms of cost and they have icons all over the field.

"It's an exciting opportunity but we're focusing on further improving our ability to stay in the contest and not get frustrated.

"The priority this week is about getting the right performance and above all I want us to take another step forward rather than going backwards. …
