Head Girl Mary Goes Back to School at 94 ; Ex-Pupil and Teacher Sees Pounds 23m Revamp

THINGS looked a lot different when Mary Ball was a pupil at Levenshulme High more than 80 years ago.

Mary, 94, went back to see her old school re-opened after a Pounds 23m refurbishment.

She was head girl in the 1930s and spent more than 15 years as a teacher there between 1945 and 1968.

Mary said it was great to be 'part of the family again' as she was shown round the renovated building, which has been transformed as part of the Building Schools for the Future Programme.

Mary said: "I was very flattered to be asked to come back. "It looks very different now, every girl had a wooden desk in my time and it was your own private domain really.

"But the extension is just wonderful.

All the girls seem really happy and very confident, which was great to see."

Mary, of Pinewood Close, Heaton Mersey, was head girl in 1934. She went on to get a degree from the University of London before gaining her teaching qualifications at Manchester University. …
