THE starting salary of police officers is to be slashed by Pounds 4,000 to Pounds 19,000 - the same as a binman. Rank-and-file officers in Manchester have slammed the move pointing out even PCSOs are earning Pounds 20,000-plus. The controversial move to slash police wages comes just four months after the deaths of Pcs Fiona Bone, 32, and Nicola Hughes, 23, who died in a gunand-grenade attack. Ian Hanson, chairman of the Greater Manchester branch of the Police Federation said: "When looking at this decision it's important to look at exactly what we expect those people to do on our behalf every day and the risks to life that go with the job.

We do not expect police officers to be paid excessively, but the government need to look at how we can attract and retain the best people.

We are now in the ridiculous situation whereby PCSOs are paid more than police officers starting in the job." PCSOs take home around Pounds 21,000-a-year after shift allowances are added to pay. …
