RETURNING Rochdale manager Keith Hill is urging his players to rise to the challenge of competition for places, writes RICHARD PARTINGTON.

Hill's second spell in charge at Spotland started last week and in his short time back at Dale he has recruited winger Andy Haworth and yesterday signed Shane Cansdell-Sherriff on loan.

Preston's experienced central defender penned a deal until the end of the season and will be in contention for a starting berth when Dale entertain Chesterfield on Saturday.

While the new arrivals pose an obvious threat to first-team places, Hill (pictured) insists the players must take the fight as a positive.

"The players have got to see the fact that I am going to recruit as a stimulus," he said. "They shouldn't see it as a negative, it's a massive positive. You want to be successful as a manager and as a player and, while players try to self-protect, they need that competitiveness in training with respect to other players coming in and forcing their hand in holding down the shirt. …
