TOWN hall chiefs are splashing out on five new stations for the water taxi set to run between Manchester city centre and Salford Quays. The five pon-and Salford Quays. The five pontoons for the so- called 'waxi' will dot the Manchester Ship Canal and the River Irwell - part of Pounds 3.1m transport improvements by Salford council including new cycle routes to MediaCity and the reopening of a footbridge across the Irwell.

It is hoped the new measures will improve accS ess to the BBC's home at MediaCity UK for commuters from around Salford. Council bosses have authorised Pounds 1.23m to come out of town hall coffers for the scheme, with the government providing the rest of the money from the Department for Transport's Local Sustainable Transport Fund.

They are now looking to team up with a private company to run water taxis between Chapel Wharf and MediaCity UK.

Salford council is set to put through Pounds 23m worth of cuts next month, with children's centres and elderly care slashed. …
