SNOW showers and 'temporary blizzards' are set to blast parts of Greater Manchester today as the big freeze blasts back in.

Heavy sleet is expected to turn to snow - with forecasters warning of possible disruption to traffic and transport.

The Met Office issued a weather warning for snow, which was in force across the region from 4pm today.

The warning - a yellow alert advising people to be aware - will remain in place until early tomorrow.

But conditions are not expected to be as bad as last month, when six inches of snow led to more than 100 schools across Greater Manchester closing.

Up to 10cm of snow could hit higher ground in areas including Rochdale, Oldham and Tameside.

Sleet showers, high winds and 'temporary blizzard conditions' are also expected across the region. The icy blast is expected to hit during the evening rushhour.

Winds reaching 50mph could also cause drifting.

A Met Office spokesman said: "Heavy, squally showers will spread to many parts of Northern Ireland and the western half of northern England during Monday, turning wintry on high ground through the middle of the day and then increasingly to lower levels during Monday evening. …
