THE youngest manager in football he might be - but new Oldham boss Lee Johnson reckons he is ready to usher in a bright new era at Boundary Park.

At only 31, some have questioned whether the former Bristol City midfielder - son of Yeovil boss Gary - is the man for Latics' crisis.

But Johnson, who has penned a two-year deal, moved quickly to allay their fears and revealed the road that has led him to Oldham took in stops at some of European football's finest arenas - and began in his childhood Suffolk home.

"Every international break as a player I have gone away," he said. "To Barcelona, Madrid, Feyenoord, Skonta Riga, Spurs, Arsenal just to learn.

Safety "I was picking my dad's teams for him at 10-years-old. If the dad's a carpenter normally the kid is good at woodwork. It's a natural progression and it doesn't seem like a big step, even though it is."

Oldham sit two points from League One safety with two games in hand on Scunthorpe, who are on the other side of the dreaded dotted line.

But Johnson, who took training for the first time yesterday, revealed he was impressed with what he saw and promised an aggressive approach.

"I went straight in and took the training session and I was really pleased with application and energy," he said. "We've got to go and score goals. That's going to be the mindset. It's no good defending and losing 1-0."

Smartly turned out in a navy suit, waistcoat and collar pins Johnson is clearly a man who takes pride in his appearance and meticulously plans every detail.

And he says those traits will apply to what goes on on the pitch.

"I have got a great plan for this club and I am convinced we can get through this season and push on," he said.

"I can assess the place and the chairman has given me full jurasdiction to do what I want.

"I am excited about that because I get to create my little baby. …
