Red Rose Find a White Knight ; All-Rounder Signs from Leicestershire on Three-Year Deal

LANCASHIRE have bolstered their squad ahead of the new season by signing all-rounder Wayne White from Leicestershire on a three-year deal.

The 27-year-old, who has also played for Derbyshire, was the Foxes' leading wicket-taker in the LV= County Championship Second Division last season with 43 scalps.

And White, who played semi-professional football as a goalkeeper before concentrating on cricket, is also more than useful with the bat in the lower order in both Championship and one-day cricket, scoring 616 runs in the four-day format last season.

"Wayne will bring additional quality in our seam bowling department and will also contribute with the bat in the middle order," said Lancashire cricket director Mike Watkinson.

"At 27 years old he is still an emerging cricketer, which fits well with our strategy going forward and is adept in all formats of the game.

"He has had an impressive record with Leicestershire over the past couple of seasons which suggests there are better things to come."

White is the third new addition to the Red Rose ranks since their relegation from the top flight last season. Following the departures of the experienced Sajid Mahmood and Gary Keedy during the winter, Watkinson and head coach Peter Moores have drafted in former England seamer Kabir Ali from Hampshire and ex-Australian Test opener Simon Katich as overseas player. However, with Tom Smith's bowling likely to be curtailed next season in a bid to reduce the hamstring injuries which plagued him last year, Moores revealed to MEN Sport in December he was keen to bring in another seamer to add to his attack which also includes Kyle Hogg, Oliver Newby, Luke Procter, skipper Glen Chapple and youngster Gavin Griffiths.

"Wayne is a rapidly emerging cricketer whose passion to improve and win trophies will match that of the rest of the squad," said Moores.

"He will give us the depth we need to compete in all three competitions and create healthy competition within the squad for a position in the first team. …
