Hospital Hunts 'Deplorable' Thief Who Struck as Victim Had Operation ; Security Alert after Two Thefts on Ward in a weekPolice Keen to Speak to Man Spotted on CCTV

AHOSPITAL is on security alert after a 'deplorable' thief targeted patients - including one victim while he was having surgery.

Wallets containing Pounds 80 cash and a mobile phone were stolen from a drawer on one of the wards at Salford Royal Hospital while a 40-year-old man was in surgery. Almost Pounds 100 belonging to a 36- year-old was stolen from a room on the same ward just days later. Police said CCTV cameras have been checked and the same person has been seen on both occasions. An image of the suspect has now been released.

The first theft happened on February 15 with the second taking place six days later.

Pc Steven Hughes said: "Targeting people when they are unwell and undergoing surgery is deplorable and we are working closely with the hospital to identify the person responsible.

"We are looking for a man who is captured on CCTV at times when both thefts have been reported and we are keen to identify him.
