Jenny's Proud despite Missing out on a Medal

ATHLETICS Rather than be disappointed with finishing out of the medals in the European Indoor Championships, Jenny Meadows has revealed she was amazed she even reached the final.

Injury meant the Wigan Harrier suffered heartbreak last year as she was unable to compete at the London Olympics.

But having been made captain of the GB side in Gothenburg, Meadows defied her lack of race fitness to finish fourth in the final.

"If I'm really honest with myself I still can't believe I've competed in the final of the European Indoor Championships," said Meadows, who went into the event as defending champion.

"It's very bizarre that I'm even in this situation. I just saw the race back for the first time and cringed a little bit because I don't want to see myself not quite prepared."

Meadows led at the bell, but in the end lacked the stamina to win gold, which went to Ukraine's Nataliya Lupu.

Former Manchester Met student Holly Bleasdale also put her Olympic woes behind her to become the first Brit to win pole vault gold in a European Championships. …
