TEMPERATURES in Manchester soared to their highest of the year for the bank holiday - as hundreds queued for ice cream to cool down.

People basked in glorious bank holiday sunshine across the region - with some reporting that they had to wait up to 45 minutes to buy an ice lolly in Heaton Park.

The day was the hottest for the region so far this year - and twice as hot as last year's May Day bank holiday, when temperatures only reached 11 Celsius.

The highest temperatures were recorded around Cheshire, but the whole region saw mercury around the 19 to 20 degrees Celsius mark.

Organisers of events around Greater Manchester saw huge turn- outs as people made the most of the sunshine at live music and traditional May Day celebrations.

Around 500 people partied to live performances by The Voice contestant and former Cleopatra star Cleo Higgins at an event in the car park of Asda in Hulme.

The first time the store has hosted such an event, it drew huge crowds who enjoyed a barbecue, ice creams and also a live performance by fellow Manchester reality TV star Mr Zip, famous for his song 'Where Me Keys, Where Me Phone'. …
