AFOURTH Manchester swimming pool looks set for a stay of execution, the MEN can reveal.

Broadway baths in Moston had been earmarked to shut in the next few weeks under swingeing council cuts plans.

But after furious public protests - backed by local Labour councillors and Manchester Central MP Lucy Powell - council chiefs are now poised to back down.

Officers are recommending they accept a revised business case put together over the last month by Friends of Broadway Leisure Centre - which wants to run the baths.

The group is expected to be given a year to put its ambitious proposal into action. It would see Pounds 50,000 a year raised in public health funding, through hosting sports programmes designed to cut rates of obesity and other medical problems.

The council's budgets for Charlestown and Moston wards would underwrite Pounds 20,000 of funding until 2016, while a further Pounds 20,000 a year would be sought from Sport England.

The action group - made up of residents and members of Broadway Swim Club and spearheaded by Moston councillors Paul Murphy and Rita Tavernor - is to work with officers over the coming year to further cement the plan. …
