Nurses Held Hostage on Ward by Gunman Patient ; Suspect Sectioned after Armed Police Called in Woman Due in Court on Weapons Charges

TWO nurses were held hostage at gunpoint by a patient they were treating. The man was being treated in the orthopaedics ward at Salford Royal Hospital when he started threatening staff with a gun and demanding medication.

He then held the women nurses hostage in a room for about 10 minutes. 'no one injured patients were Armed police were called to the hospital and the man was detained and a firearm recovered. It is understood the gun was taken into the hospital by an accomplice.

Patients reported their terror on Twitter. Claire Williams wrote: "Serious firearms incident at Salford Royal Hospital at the mo. I'm a patient and male with weapon has come onto ward & held nurse hostage...the...staff here...Did not think twice to protect patients from what could have been fatal."

Following the incident, police raided a house on My Street, Weaste, Salford, as part of their investigation.

Chris Brookes, A&E consultant and executive medical director at Salford Royal, said: "I attended was and safely the hospital shortly after the incident. …
