WAYNE Rooney has claimed his international career will have been 'pointless' unless England can challenge for trophies on the international stage.

The 27-year-old United striker picked up his 81st cap in the 1-1 draw against the Republic of Ireland at Wembley.

His 35 international goals see him sit fifth in the all-time list of England goalscorers, 14 behind the record held by United legend Sir Bobby Charlton.

But Rooney - whose future at Old Trafford remains unresolved having asked for a transfer before the end of the season - would prefer to win trophies with his country over the next part of his career rather than go beyond individual milestoness.

"Some people talk about records, but I'm not really too fussed," Rooney said. "I've always felt that, to be successful, you have to win trophies.

"I could end my career with England being record goalscorer and maybe even record capsholder, but if you're not going to be successful, then it's pointless.

"That's why I play for England, to try to help England be successful. …
