IT was a special homecoming for Salford singing star Mike Ward after he made the final of BBC talent show The Voice.

Mike headed back to his aunt and uncle's pub, the Dover Inn in Broughton, yesterday to be met by huge cheers, champagne and a welcome home party.

Family and friends rushed to congratulate Mike, 23, who has battled his shyness to now be tipped as the UK's first big country artist.

He is in line to win a recording contract if he wins the final public vote against the three remaining contestants, Leah McFall, Angela Begley and Matt Henry.

And back home in Salford, Mike couldn't thank mum Julie enough - for applying for his audition to the show in the first place.

He said: "I've always been shy, and I would never have done this myself, I needed pushing, and it's my mum who believed in me from the start."

Julie, wearing a 'Mike's Proud Mum' T-shirt, said: "I knew when I heard him singing in his bedroom how talented he was, I couldn't be any prouder of what he has already achieved. …
