'IT felt like the right time to end a nice story. It will be five years, 99 clubnights. We never set out to go that long. We've done pretty much all we ever wanted to do with it. Neither of us want it to be bigger or become a brand."

How very indie that the indiest of Manchester indie nights should do that indie thing of calling it a day before things get too big or samey. We're reminiscing with Dave Bassinder ahead of the last ever Underachievers Please Try Harder, which closes its doors for the final time tonight.

"I've always really believed in bands or clubs that know when their time might be up. We now have an end goal, to make these final parties the best of the lot, and this has really been spurring us on!" The 'us' Dave refers to is him and co-promoter Kirsty Maguire, who have run the night together for the last half a decade. A fifth birthday party at the start of the month doubled as the first leg of a farewell doubler-header, as the duo decided to call time on the night.
