WHILE most of us struggle to even keep our lawns trim, property developer Andrew Irlam has converted his front garden into a huge new polo pitch.

Andrew is such a fan of the sport - beloved of royalty, the rich and famous - that he set about transforming the lawn of his sprawling Cheshire mansion ready to cater for his own polo tournament that launches later this week.

The NewHall Polo Tournament will start with a Ladies Day event on Thursday, with a host of the region's glitterati set to attend raising funds for local charities in the process.

Andrew says: "I've been playing polo for 10 years, and when I moved to this house one of the things that struck me was how flat the ground was.

"It makes the front lawn ideal for a polo field."

Andrew and his brothers, who all formerly ran the family haulage empire James Irlam Limited in Cheshire, are all keen polo players and will take part in the charity tournament which launches on Thursday.

And, intriguingly, they will go up against the Stobart family - all part of the Eddie Stobart group that bought out the Irlam firm back in a multi-million pound deal back in 2008. …
