'Drunken' Driver Refused to Take Breath Test after Police Car Crash

A 'DRUNKEN' motorist crashed into the back of a police car - then drove away at speed.

Clair Meara, 27, refused to take a breathalyser test after she was arrested 'in a drunken state' 20 minutes after the crash, a court was told.

But Manchester magistrates heard she was unsteady on her feet and slurring her words when she was arrested at her home.

Meara, of Thurlby Avenue, Blackley, smashed into a police car as it was at traffic lights, preparing to turn left onto Victoria Avenue from Rochdale Road in Blackley.

Two police officers in the car, which had stopped at a red light, were unhurt in the crash.

Meara, who pleaded guilty to four charges relating to the collision, has now been banned from driving.

The court was told that the police officers heard Meara's Seat Ibiza approaching at speed.

Subhanur Chowdhury, prosecuting, said the impact shunted the police car 6ft forward.

He said: "The impact hits the police vehicle on its rear. There was significant damage caused. …
