ON Tuesday night I asked Lancashire coach Peter Moores if he felt Simon Kerrigan was ready for Test cricket.

The former England boss was in no doubt.

"It's the right time," he said. "If you look statistically at his record, there's no spinner who's going to touch him as a young spinner in first-class cricket.

"He takes his wickets at an average of 26, which as a finger spinner is very good.

"He bowls the right sort of balls for Test match play. He can bowl people out on a flat pitch. He spins the ball hard, he's aggressive, he creates dip and shape on the ball, which puts batters under pressure."

But Moores also added a final line: "Sometimes, as always with a spinner, you've got to survive the first innings to have the fun of bowling in the second innings!" And that is what Kerrigan now has to cling on to.

Lancashire fans who have seen him take a hatful of wickets to win game after game for the Red Rose over the last three seasons won't have recognised the nervous and inconsistent left-arm spinner who made his Test debut at The Oval yesterday. …
