BILLIONAIRE investor Carl Icahn had a meeting with Tim Cook, the CEO of Apple. He proceeded to tweet about it, and as a result of that, it sent stocks soaring over five per cent in the Californian computer manufacturer.

In total, it added $17bn to the price of Apple's shares.

The example shows social media works best when it leans its emphasis on the communication, rather than the technology. Twitter is simple to use, and shares ideas quickly.

That's why when many Metrolink passengers are delayed, they tweet their frustration to their followers. If - as happened this week - a tweeter with 129,000 followers tweets a link to an article first posted on our site in 2007, it follows that hundreds of people immediately click through and take a look.

Ultimately, if something is shared by someone you trust - a friend or colleague - more people will look at it. It's in the companies' interests for them to look good.
