Salford Named Toughest Place in the Country to Find a Job ; 76 People on Average Chasing Every vacancyMayor Hits Back Saying No Need to 'Lose Hope'

SALFORD has been named the toughest place to land a job in the country.

The city topped the list, with data revealing there are 76 jobseekers chasing every advertised vacancy.

Salford was just ahead of Hull, in Yorkshire, then Rochdale, which has, on average, 44 jobseekers for every vacancy. The study was produced by job search engine Adzuna, which compiles real-time lists of all job vacancies from 300 different sources.

Salford mayor Ian Stewart said the figures distorted the picture and were not a 'genuine assessment of the job market'.

He said they were working with local businesses to create jobs and had launched a programme to offer more opportunities, including apprenticeships and voluntary work placements.

He said: "Local jobcentres in Salford are exceeding national targets in placing local people in work.

"Billions of pounds are being invested in housing, transport and regeneration in Salford to help create new jobs and build growth in our local economy. …
