'Visionary' Lowry Boss Dies Aged 58 ; Tribute to Theatre's Artistic director'He Brought the World to Salford'

TRIBUTES have been paid to The Lowry's artistic director Robert Robson, who has died aged 58.

Mr Robson - credited with building the Salford arts venue up from 'a hole in the ground' - passed away suddenly on Friday night.

He had worked at The Lowry since 1998, having previously been director of the Glasgow arts festival, Mayfest, and general manager for performing arts venues in Aberdeen in his native Scotland.

The cause of his death has not been revealed.

he Lowry chief executive Julia Fawcett said: "Robert provided inspirational artistic leadership to The Lowry from the moment the venue first opened its doors; with the vision to 'bring the world to Salford and Salford to the world'.

"Alongside this, he played a crucial role in the arts both nationally and internationally, including his role as Chair of Phoenix Dance and on the board of directors of the International Society for the Performing Arts.

"He was respected across the industry, and will be greatly missed by his colleagues here at The Lowry and the people he worked with and supported across the country. …
