Big Three Have Got Spring in Their Step

BOWLS Three members of a top Manchester side will be hoping to bring more reflected success to their club in finals week of the Waterloo Handicap, writes STEVE McHUGH.

Andy Buckley, Martin Hodson and Paul Heap have reached the last 64 of the competition, whose finals week starts in Blackpool on Saturday and culminates in the last eight playing off for the coveted title next Wednesday (10am).

And all are members of Springbank, the club which has just clinched the Chadderton League title for the first time since 1944.

Hodson and Heap have been key components of that team. While Buckley plays for Nimble Nook in the Chadderton League, Buckley does play for Springbank in the Failsworth League.

The latter goes into the later stages of the Waterloo one of the favourites to lift the big title and Pounds 2,500 first prize, starting with a last 64 date against Andy Mailer (Sheffield), after previously reaching finals day on three occasions.

Buckley is certainly the man in form, having won the Pounds 1,100 top prize in the Spen Victoria Classic at the weekend to add to earlier big wins in the Frank Beeley Trophy at Houldsworth WMC in Reddish and the Sandal Classic at Wakefield, plus topping the Chadderton League averages for winning all 18 games. …
