UNITED''s dream of enticing Cristiano Ronaldo back is over. The winger has signed a new world record five-year contract with Real Madrid and declared that Manchester is in his past.

His mind-blowing deal, worth Pounds 76m, takes him to 2018 and is higher than the contract signed by Gareth Bale - although the ex- Spurs man is the most expensive player in the world after his Pounds 86m transfer from Tottenham. Ronaldo''s future at Real was called into question during Madrid''s protracted pursuit of Welshman Bale and the Reds spent the summer battling to pull off a sensational coup by bringing him back.

The 28-year-old Portuguese forward (right) didn''t rule out a headlinegrabbing return four years after his then record Pounds 80m move from Old Trafford.

Speculation reached fever pitch in July when United chief executive Ed Woodward came back early from the club tour of the Far East on what was described as 'urgent transfer business', with kit manufacturer Nike said to be involved in a possible deal to take super Ron back to Old Trafford.

But those forlorn hopes have been dashed with Ronaldo, whose previous deal had been due to run out in 2015, expressing delight at agreeing new lucrative terms and stressing the Spanish capital is where he wants to stay.
