THE scale of the government's cut in council funding will impact upon service users across Greater Manchester.

Public service workers have worked tirelessly to keep local services afloat over the past three years, but this continued assault on local government finances threatens all our councils' core functions.

Services that have already been cut to the bone will be re- visited for further reductions.

Our members in areas such as libraries, leisure centres and social care will again face uncertainty about their job security - and where jobs are lost it has a devastating effect on the local economy.

Greater Manchester is being required by the ConDem government to pay a very high price in the name of clearing a deficit that was caused by greed in the banking sector.

The deficit could be cleared without any damaging service cuts at all if the Pounds 70bn per annum lost through tax avoidance and evasion were re-couped.

We are seeing an unnecessary assault on public services, driven by ideological dogma rather than economic necessity. …
