HOTELS HOTELS POSH Palazzo Victoria ThIs luxury hotel (pictured), on main street Corso Porta Borsari, was 'THERE is no world without Verona walls," wrote William Shakespeare, as he bestowed the ancient city with the most famous love story of all, Romeo and Juliet.

Romance is everywhere in Verona, in its architecture; its art; its people - in the city's very soul. There is, however, far more than star-crossed lovers to enjoy about the sun-drenched piazzas, busy markets and vineyards that blanket the surrounding hills.

MUST sees for free Old Verona Ancient architecture, some dating back 2,000 years, lies on every street in central Verona.

Highlights include Porta Borsari, formerly a Roman fort and watch tower. Only its bold and imposing facade remains, acting as a gateway to the city.

Arilica Antica excavations This is an open air archaeological site. The excavations lie near the San Martino Church, showing the unearthed foundations of Roman structures.

Lake Garda Around half an hour's drive from the city, Lake Garda attracts thousands of tourists each year, with its waterside towns, villages, and beaches.

Top sees for a fee The Capulet House Dating back to the 13th century, this is best known as Juliet's House.

The famous balcony on which Juliet called out for Romeo adorns the brick facade.

Opening hours 1.30pm to 7.30pm Monday, 8.30am-7.30pm all other days. Arena The Arena is consid-ered Verona's most famous monument.

The amphitheatre lies in Piazza Bra and dates back to the 1st century A.D. It is the third largest amphitheatre in Italy, after Rome's Colosseum and the amphitheatre of Capua.

Lamberti's Tower The tower was formerly the seat of the Government of Verona. Visitors have a choice between the gruelling 368 steps up to the top, or the electric lift for stunning panoramic views.

Open 8.30am-7.30pm daily.
