Moyes Demands a Response from Reds ; Furious United Boss Admits There Was No Excuse for a Woeful Display from His Players

UNITED got the first taste of David Moyes' hairdryer treatment after they were humbled at the Etihad Stadium.

The Premier League champions slumped to a humiliating 4-1 defeat in the new manager's first derby since taking over from Sir Alex Ferguson in the summer.

And Moyes emulated his famously fiery predecessor with a post- match dressing down of his players.

"We certainly didn't start the game well," he said. "City were the better team, stronger, they got control and we found it difficult to contain them. I am disappointed we didn't perform.

There was no reason for us not to perform well. But it was one game. There are plenty more to come and plenty of time for us to try to fix it.

"I think we were second to things in the first-half especially. We seemed to be a yard behind it and never got to the pitch of the game right from the off. We had a good result in midweek to build on, but we never got to grips with it."

Two goals from Sergio Aguero and strikes from Yaya Toure and Samir Nasri saw Manuel Pellegrini's side run riot.

Moyes has now lost to Liverpool and City in his opening weeks in charge, with United sitting five points off the pace at the top of the Premier League. But whereas he defended his players after the 1- 0 defeat at Anfield earlier this month, he came out firing at the Etihad.

Moyes now expects an instant reaction.

"I've made them aware of that," he said. "If there is ever a group of players I would expect that reaction from, it is Manchester United. It's the way they have been brought up, it's the way they've been bred, the manager previously - they react. That's what they do and that's what they'll do here.

"I have been here with Everton many times and not suffered a defeat like this. I told the players, the way I would have told players at any club if I don't think they are doing it. …
