Parents of Girl Killed by Pack of Dogs Back New Safety Campaign ; Schoolgirl Was Savaged by Pack Now Help at Hand for Dog Owners

Article excerpt

THE family of a teenage girl mauled to death by a pack of dogs is backing a new campaign aimed at cutting the risk of future attacks.

Jade Lomas-Anderson, 14, was savaged by four dogs as she was visiting the home of a friend near Wigan in March.

Now Jade's Campaign has been launched in Wigan to encourage owners to be responsible and control their dogs' behaviour.

It was launched yesterday with an awareness event at a community centre on the Hag Fold estate in Atherton where Jade lived.

Dog owners are being invited to seek advice about controlling their pets.

Staff from Wigan council and the Blue Cross dog welfare charity will hand out leaflets and free neutering vouchers. Owners can also get their dogs micro-chipped for free.

A major marketing campaign has also been launched to encourage owners to take better care of their animals and to get people to report any concerns they have about a dog.

Jade's stepfather Michael Anderson, 34, said: "The message we want people to understand is that if a dog isn't cared for properly it can potentially become dangerous.

"This is a practical campaign calling on people to make sure they are looking after their dogs."

Since Jade's death, her mum Shirley Anderson and stepdad Michael have led a high-profile campaign calling for tougher sentences for owners whose dogs attack people.

The issue has been raised in the Commons by their MP Julie Hilling.

She has also backed the new campaign encouraging responsible dog ownership. …
