THERE comes a time for many people when you need the space of an estate car. Gone are the days of two seater, open-top motoring or hot hatches as baby seats and buggies are more likely to be in the back of your motor.

But you don't have to give up all the fun of driving thanks to the latest trend for manufacturers to produce 'Sport Tourer' models.

One such is Renault's Megane Sport Tourer, which has all the space a growing family could need wrapped in a stylish package which is still pleasing to drive.

Our test car was the Dynamique TomTom TCe 115 model, with fuel- saving stop-start technology. With sports styling, side skirts and chrome roof bars plus smart 17" alloy wheels and LED running lights, the Sport Tourer is certainly not your average dull, boxy estate car.

And when you get inside the level of equipment is impressive - including a live traffic update satnav, rear reversing camera, parking sensors, cruise control, air conditioning, premium sound system and keyless entry... the list of equipment is long for such a reasonably priced car.

A very pleasant overnight break at a hotel tucked away in the beautiful countryside above Kirkby Lonsdale provided the ideal opportunity to give the car's sporting claims a good try out on twisty north Lancashire lanes.

Now here I was not expecting too much after being surprised to discover this quite decent-sized car has just an 1198cc engine - only 100cc more than my first ever car (a knackered Mini which struggled to break the speed limit going downhill).

But it was a revelation... feeling more like a 1.6 the car pulls well throughout the rev range and, thanks also to a six-speed manual box, can cruise in comfort on the motorways at well above the legal limit if you chose to do so - which I obviously did not.
