Charming Marling Has a Stunning Stage Presence ; REVIEW

Laura Marling The Lowry SHE might look like a fairytale Little Bo Peep who's lost her sheep, but Laura Marling has confidence way bigger than her slight stature suggests.

It takes proverbial steel ones to walk out on a cavernous stage like that at The Lowry's Lyric theatre alone, flanked only by two acoustic guitars, and perform without pause for applause for 15 minutes through a dramatic suite of four songs: Take The Night Off, I Was An Eagle, You Know and Breathe.

That is, of course, the staggering and epic introduction to her fourth studio album, Once I Was An Eagle; penned when Laura was still a tender 22 years old but already sounding like a composition that people will return to decades from now with studious wonder.

This time she's touring alone, and so it's all about that voice and her ringing guitar. Dressed in a vintage white dress (apparently picked up the night before and mistaken by the shop owner for a fancy dress costume), Laura roams a broad folk landscape that still seems impossibly full for a girl of her age to comprehend, let alone create. …
