Peter Grimes by Opera North The Lowry BACK at The Lowry seven years after its debut there, Phyllida Lloyd's powerful production of Peter Grimes opened the Festival of Britten with huge impact. It is visually minimalist, the stage filled by the large chorus, children and the cast, plus only a few symbolic props - an enormous net hoisted aloft to represent Grimes's boat, a simple platform as his cliffedge hut.

These powerful images set the tone for the performance. The dramatic atmosphere is in part due to the conducting of Jac van Steen, who demonstrates complete mastery of the score and its big moments. Phyllida Lloyd has put an even keener emphasis on the psychology of Peter Grimes, the moody and sometimes violent fisherman who has to answer for the deaths of two apprentice boys - and finally takes his own life by sinking his boat at sea.

Jeffrey Lloyd-Roberts and Giselle Allen are, as before, superb interpreters of the title role and his teacher soulmate, Ellen. …
