MANUEL Pellegrini got one over his opposite number when he went for FIVE in midfield, writes MIKE KEEGAN.

Edin Dzeko was in line to start up front but the Chilean master tactician opted to match Liverpool's packed midfield ranks.

But for long periods at the Etihad it was rope-adope, with his side soaking up ferocious pressure from that lot at the other end of the East Lancs Road.

Pellegrini was forced into a defensive reshuffle before the game when Martin Demichelis pulled up in a Christmas Day training session.

He slotted Joleon Lescott in at centre-half as City lined up in a strong-looking 4-2-3-1 that matched Brendan Rodgers'formation.

Prompted by the absence of Sergio Aguero it was the first time Pellegrini had used a five-man midfield at home but it looked anything but a defensive move as the Blues dominated early on with the attacking trio of Jesus Navas, David Silva and Samir Nasri bursting forward to support lone striker Alvaro Negredo.

The visitors, however, look the real deal under Rodgers and gradually got into their stride. …
