AHEROIC shop owner fought off an armed robber brandishing an iron bar and hammer - with a piece of wood. Khanh Le, 54, refused to hand over cash to the hooded thug and chased him from West Coast Wines in Bredbury, Stockport.

He was struck with both the bar and the hammer in the attack at 5.30pm on Sunday - before picking up the stick and beating off his attacker.

Police have appealed for witnesses and praised the bravery of Mr Le, who has owned the general store on Lower Bents Lane for 15 years. Mr Le said: "He hit me over the head and I tried to dodge and find something. I grabbed a stick and that made me feel more confident.

"I smacked him back and ran towards him but I didn't get too close as I didn't know what else he would have. 'I was angry, scared'I was angry, not scared', as I work hard. This is a family business.

I can't afford to lose money so I'm not going to let people take it easily. …
