Raid Gang Dig Deep to Escape with Pounds 86,000 ; Cashpoint Thieves'with High Expertise'spend Months Burrowing under Petrol Station

AGANG escaped with Pounds 86,000 after digging a 50ft tunnel to raid a supermarket cash machine.

Meticulous planning over months resulted in thieves hitting the jackpot at the Tesco Express store on Liverpool Road, Eccles.

Police say a high degree of expertise was used by the gang to route a tunnel from wasteland nearby under a car park to the machine at the entrance of the shop.

They struck between midnight and 6am on Friday - after the machine had been loaded to cope with weekend demand for money.

The cash was removed from metal cartridges in the machine and police are investigating whether the gang had inside information.

Detectives believe the raid could be linked to two previous raids by a 'mole gang' in Greater Manchester who were never caught.

The tunnel went close to a Tesco petrol station on the same site but no petrol pipes were hit.

The store is bordered by the Bridgewater Canal, the main road, and wasteland that was once a coach yard.

Amazingly, the gang were able to drill through concrete and dispose of soil over many weeks without being spotted. …
