Bridging the Gap! Firm Wins River Crossing Contest ; Architects Chosen to Build Iconic Bridge It Is Part of Pounds 650m Redevelopment

THIS is what a major new footbridge in Salford will look like after a contest involving top architects.

Salford town hall worked with architects body Riba to carry out the search for the best design for a new pedestrian bridge across the River Irwell.

The new bridge will cross at a site, which will be known as The Meadows, being built as part of the Irwell River Park project.

It is part of a Pounds 650m redevelopment of Salford Central, Chapel Street, Salford University and Peel Park.

The elegant, curved bridge was created by Tonkin Liu and Arup. 'Its qualities it will look at But prestigious firms from Paris, London, Stockport and Altrincham were also in the running. Salford council launched the competition with the Royal Institute of British Architects (Riba) last year.

The proposed bridge over Peel Park will connect to the Crescent, near its intersection off Oldfield Road. Renato Benedetti, from Riba, said "Tonkin Liu with Arup are worthy winners; their unique bridge is poetic, innovative and elegantly engineered with sinuous curves seamlessly linking the Meadows with the new public space to be created. …
